Summer Skin Care Needs - Lily of the Desert

Summer Skin Care Needs

With summer in full swing, now’s the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors. However, as much as we love the sun, spending too much time basking in its glow can lead to some woes for our skin.

The sun is one of the best and most convenient sources of Vitamin D available. Getting enough sunlight is important for fighting off fatigue and maintaining good health, but how much is too much? Well, studies suggest we’re meant to be outside approximately 10 to 30 minutes for at least three times a week, and that overexposure can be potentially harmful to our health.

Help Keep Your Skin Happy & Hydrated

Step one is to make sure you are using proper sun protection daily. Using a mineral-based sunscreen for your body can significantly help with avoiding sunburns. A mineral sunscreen contains either zinc oxide by itself, or in combination with titanium dioxide, to block UV light. If you want the most natural version, your best bet is to go with the zinc oxide. Look for labels that show broad spectrum to cover both UVA and UVB sunlight and remember to reapply if you need to be in the sun throughout the day.

Another great way to keep your skin hydrated is using a SPF moisturizer for your face and there are great natural options available. By choosing to use products that don’t use chemicals, you avoid absorbing potential toxins into your face. You can apply a natural SPF moisturizer daily to keep your skin healthy and ward off potential sun damage. Here’s a list of many product options that could suit your needs.

Sunscreen and SPF moisturizer do a great job of helping to protect your skin, but don’t forget your lips can be damaged by UV rays as well. One study shows 63% of people fail to protect their lips from the sun. Since slathering sunscreen on your lips isn’t an appealing option, look for some lip balm with a SPF ingredient. Once again, zinc oxide is a natural ingredient and will work well in your lip balm.

Finally, it’s important to consider that the heat and rays from the sun pulls moisture out of the skin and will ultimately leave it dry and dehydrated. Our 99% Aloe Gelly helps to hydrate at least 3 epidermal layers and naturally replenishes the skin with moisture.  It can be used daily along with your sunscreen and/or moisturizer to help retain your skin’s moisture and help keep it looking healthy and hydrated.

What to Do If You Get Too Much Sun

As much as we may try, sometimes we get too much sun and end up with red and irritated skin. Lily of the Desert’s 99% Aloe Vera Gelly does not prevent sun-kissed skin, but it can be a welcome relief after that prolonged sun exposure. It can be used to cool down skin and help add back some of the moisture you may have lost. When it comes down to it, that bit of added relief can be the difference between saying “oooooooh” vs “ahhhhhh”.  You can even try leaving the gelly in the refrigerator for an even cooler feeling for your skin, especially during these intensely hot summer days.

Plus, the gelly is available in convenient sizes for whatever your family needs are:

4 oz. – Perfect size for the purse and on-the-go moisture.

8 oz. – Great option for 2-3 people.

12 oz. – Wonderful for the family.

And of course, as we head out of the house more, make sure you have hand sanitizer to keep your hands free from germs. Check out our homemade recipe using our soothing aloe. It helps to keep your skin clean but also soothed.
