How Warmer Weather Affects Our Skin

This is proving to be a high-voltage summer, with temperatures climbing into the triple digits in many parts of the country. And now that the season is in full swing, many of us are braving the heat and heading outside. From fun trips to the beach with the kids to a day at the ballpark or sightseeing in a new city, we just can’t seem to get enough of the sun’s golden rays.

But like all good things in life, moderation and good planning are key when it comes to basking in the summer sun. Today we’ll discuss the great benefits the sun offers, as well as the potential dangers of overexposure and how you can help summer-proof your skin!

Sunshine Perks

In addition to providing us with a healthy dose of vitamin D, 10 – 30 minutes spent in the midday sun can deliver several surprising health benefits. While helping the body absorb calcium (keeping your bones strong!), vitamin D also promotes immune health. Treating yourself to time in the sunshine also kills bacteria, chases away the blues, improves sleep quality, and may help lower your blood pressure. All the more reason to take a late-morning power walk or enjoy your lunch on a sunny patio!

Summertime Hazards

Even though we naturally associate the sun with fun, we must address the potential risks associated with getting too much sunshine.

It’s no secret that overexposure to the sun can result in serious skin damage. Excessive radiation from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can compromise the skin, causing various harmful effects, including sunburns, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

A sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes, leaving skin red, blistered, and painful. And sun damage isn’t limited to your skin! Excessive amounts of UV light can also impact your eyes, potentially injuring the lens, retina, and cornea.

Don’t Forget The Sunscreen!

It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re enjoying the great outdoors. Assuming the temperatures are reasonably comfortable, several hours can pass without you realizing that your skin is unprotected. This is why wearing good sunscreen is so essential.

But in addition to choosing the right sunscreen for yourself and your family (kiddos and those with sensitive skin will have different needs), it has to be applied correctly. Always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen when spending time outside. This will protect you from both UVA and UVB radiation. Apply the product generously and reapply it every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.

So you look at your phone and realize you’ve spent most of the afternoon lounging by the pool.
