The Importance of GRAS Certification - Lily of the Desert

The Importance of GRAS Certification

While there are many different types of certifications out there for products, the GRAS certification is able to give consumers peace of mind during daily use. Lily of the Desert completed a rigorous GRAS certification process a few years back due to growing concerns about aloin content found in aloe.

But first, let’s talk about what being GRAS certified means, and why it is so important that Lily of the Desert is the only aloe brand that has received it.

The Importance of GRAS Certification

For those who don’t know, GRAS stands for “Generally Recognized as Safe”. The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, uses this acronym in the manufacturing of food and health products. GRAS describes ingredients of products that are considered safe if ingested or used over time.

Obtaining a GRAS certification can require an extensive amount of time and scientific research. Lily of the Desert was reviewed by an expert panel to ensure all requirements are met. From processing to manufacturing, this expert panel looked at the entire product lifecycle.

We Are The Only GRAS Certified Aloe Brand

Lily sought a GRAS certification soon after a FDA-backed study into aloe vera showed that high quantities of aloin could cause health issues. Aloin, also known as aloe latex or anthraquinones, is a thin layer of yellow sap found within the aloe vera plant. If consumed in high doses, it can cause a laxative effect. In raw form, aloe’s aloin content is around 10,000 parts per million – a high amount for our bodies to endure.

Studies published in the Journal of Toxicology show that Lily of the Desert products contain less than 1 part per million aloin content, or 1,000 times less than raw Aloe vera. Both our whole leaf and inner fillet products are safe to use on a daily basis and for extended periods of time. As the only GRAS certified aloe brand, Lily of the Desert offers the safest aloe experience on the market.

Of course, we don’t just stop there. Gold Standard Clinical Studies show that Aloesorb™, our patent-pending aloe infusion, is scientifically-proven to take aloe to the next level. This confirmed a major increase in nutrient absorption rates. It also helps support white blood cell counts, enhance antioxidant support, and reduce toxic nitrate levels.

Through our efforts and dedication to our brand, we have raised the standards of aloe vera products and increased awareness of the overall benefits aloe vera provides.
